Trustee model of representation

Okay, kiddo. So you know how sometimes you have a grown-up in charge - like a teacher or a parent? And they have to make decisions that are good for you and your friends or siblings, even if you don't always agree with them?

It's similar with our government. We elect people, called representatives, to make decisions on our behalf. But they can't always ask everyone in the country what they think. So, these representatives have to make decisions based on what they believe is best for everyone.

Now, the trustee model of representation is one way that these representatives can decide how to make those decisions. A trustee is someone who is put in charge of something and has to take care of it. So, when someone is elected as a representative, they become a trustee of the people who elected them.

As a trustee, they have to think very carefully about what is best for their constituents, or the people they represent. They have to use their own judgment and knowledge to make decisions that they think will most benefit the people who elected them, even if not everyone agrees with those decisions.

So, the trustee model of representation means that our representatives act like trustees - they take on the responsibility of making decisions for us, and they use their own judgment to decide what is best for everyone, not just what people want in the short term.
