ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Turkish Sign Language

Turkish Sign Language is a way for deaf people in Turkey to talk to each other and communicate with people who can't hear them. Just like how people who can hear use their voice to talk, deaf people use their hands, arms, and facial expressions to express themselves.

Imagine that your ears don't work and you can't hear your friends or family talking to you. Sign language helps you understand what they are saying. Turkish Sign Language has its own unique signs that are different from American Sign Language or British Sign Language.

Each sign is like a word in a sentence, and just like how words can be combined to form sentences to create meaning in spoken languages, signs can be combined to form sentences in sign language. For example, if you want to say "I love you" in Turkish Sign Language, you would use the signs for "I," "love," and "you" together.

In addition to signing, facial expressions are important in Turkish Sign Language. Facial expressions help convey emotions and tone, just like how the tone of voice can change the meaning of a sentence in spoken language.

Turkish Sign Language is taught in school to students who are deaf, and it can also be learned by anyone who is interested in learning how to communicate with deaf people. It's a great way to make sure everyone can communicate and be understood, no matter their ability to hear.
