Umbrella Movement

The umbrella movement is a group of people who protested in Hong Kong in 2014. They were upset because they wanted free elections where everyone could vote for the leaders of Hong Kong's government. The Chinese government had promised they could have free elections, but they later said that they would only let certain people choose the candidates. This made a lot of people angry, so they started to protest.

The protesters used umbrellas to protect themselves from things like pepper spray and tear gas that the police used to try to stop them. That’s why it’s called the “umbrella movement". The protesters wanted people around the world to know what was happening in Hong Kong, so they used social media to share pictures and videos of the protests.

The movement lasted for 79 days, and it was one of the longest and largest protests that Hong Kong had ever seen. Eventually, the protesters had to leave the streets because the police cleared them out. But their message was heard by many people around the world, and it showed how important it is to stand up for what you believe in.
