Unconditional positive regard means that we accept and love someone no matter what they do. It’s like when your mommy and daddy love you no matter if you’re happy or sad, if you behave or misbehave, and no matter what choices you make. They still love you the same. That’s unconditional positive regard!
Imagine playing with your best friend. You like him because he is a good listener and helps you with your puzzles. But one day, he gets mad and throws a fit. You might be upset with him and not want to play anymore. But if you have unconditional positive regard for your friend, you will still want to play with him the next day even though he threw a fit.
It’s important to remember that unconditional positive regard doesn’t mean we approve of someone’s behavior or actions. We can still say, “That behavior was not okay, but I still love you and accept you for who you are.”
It’s not always easy to have unconditional positive regard for others, but it’s something we should strive for because it helps create stronger relationships and better connections with others.
