ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Unconscious thought theory

Have you ever noticed how sometimes you do things without really thinking about them? Like when you brush your teeth or tie your shoes, you don't even have to think about each step, it just happens automatically. That's kind of like what happens with your thoughts sometimes.

There's a theory called the unconscious thought theory that says that sometimes our brains are working on things without us even realizing it. It's like there's a little helper in our head that's doing all the thinking for us, without us even being aware of it.

So let's say you have a decision to make, like what kind of ice cream to get at the store. You might think about it for a little while, but then go off and do something else like play with your toys or watch TV. Even though you're not actively thinking about the ice cream decision anymore, your brain is still working on it in the background. And eventually, your brain will come up with the answer – maybe you'll suddenly remember that you love mint chocolate chip, or you'll have a sudden craving for strawberry.

The unconscious thought theory says that even though you weren't actively thinking about the decision, your brain was still working on it in the background. And sometimes, when we let our brains work on things without us actively thinking about them, we make better decisions. So let's say you're trying to decide what to do about a problem at school. Instead of obsessing over it, you might take a break and do something else. And while you're doing that other thing, your brain is still working on the problem. And when you come back to it later, you might find that you have a better solution than you would have if you had just kept thinking about it non-stop.

Basically, the unconscious thought theory is all about how our brains can work on things without us even realizing it, and how sometimes that can lead to better decisions. So if you have a tough decision to make, try taking a break and letting your brain work on it in the background – you might be surprised at what it comes up with!
