ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

United Kingdom traffic laws

In the United Kingdom, we have rules for how people have to drive on the roads. These rules are there to keep everyone safe and make sure everyone can get around easily. Here are some of the most important things to remember:

1. Drive on the left side of the road. In the UK, we drive on the left side of the road. This means that cars, buses, and lorries all stay on the left-hand side.

2. Follow the speed limit. We have speed limits on our roads to keep everyone safe. The speed limit depends on where you are driving. If you're in a built-up area, like a town or city, the speed limit is usually 30 miles per hour (MPH). On the motorway, the speed limit is usually 70 MPH.

3. Wear your seatbelt. When you're driving, it's really important to wear your seatbelt. This keeps you safe in case of a crash.

4. Stop at red lights and obey road signs. When you come to a red traffic light, you always have to stop. You also need to pay attention to road signs, which will tell you things like how fast you can go or which direction you need to turn in.

5. Don't drink and drive. You must not drink alcohol and then drive a car. This is against the law and is really dangerous.

6. Use your signals. When you're turning left or right, you need to use your indicators to let other drivers know what you're doing. This is important so that everyone can stay safe on the road.

By following these rules and being a careful driver, you can help make sure that everyone stays safe on the road.
