Okay kiddo, you know how the government helps us make rules and keep us safe? Well, there are grownups who work together in different groups to do that. These groups are called federal executive departments.
There are a total of 15 executive departments in the United States government. Each department has a special job they do to help keep our country running smoothly.
For instance, the Department of Agriculture makes sure we have enough food to eat and that farmers are growing and selling their crops safely. The Department of Education helps schools and teachers make sure kids like you are getting the best education possible.
Other departments help take care of things like our health (Department of Health and Human Services), our natural resources (Department of the Interior), and our safety (Department of Homeland Security).
Each department has a boss called a Secretary. These bosses, along with other important grownups, like the President and Vice President, work together to make sure each department is doing their job correctly and that our government is working the way it's supposed to.
So the next time you hear someone talk about the different federal executive departments in the government, you'll know they're talking about the important grownups who help keep our country safe and running smoothly.
