Immigration means when people come to live in the United States from other countries. The United States tracks information about who is coming to live in our country, including how many people and from which countries. The government looks at this data, called immigration statistics, to help make decisions about which countries people can come from and how many people from each country can come. Immigration statistics also help the United States decide if people should be allowed to work when they come here, or if the number of people coming is too many for the United States to manage.
