ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Universal Scene Description

Okay kiddo, do you remember playing with dolls or action figures, and creating different scenes with them? Like having them go to the beach, or having a party at a pretend house?

Well, imagine if you could do that but in a computer with 3D graphics. Universal Scene Description, or USD for short, helps people who work on movies, TV shows, video games and more, create these 3D scenes easily and quickly.

It works kind of like a big box that stores all the information needed to create these scenes. USD can store all sorts of things like characters, their movements, the environment they are in, and even special effects like explosions or magic spells.

This is really important because it allows lots of people to work on the same project at the same time, without stepping on each other's toes. So one person could be working on the characters, while another is working on the background, and they can both see what the other is doing without messing it up.

USD is also really smart. It can help people reuse things they've already made, like a cool effect they used in another movie. This saves time and money because they don't have to make everything from scratch every time.

So that's just a little bit about USD. It makes creating 3D scenes like playing with action figures, but easier and faster with the help of a computer.
