ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Use of social network websites in investigations

Okay kiddo, so do you remember playing hide and seek with your friends? Sometimes, when you couldn't find them, you would ask someone else for help, like maybe your mom or dad. Well, police officers are kind of like the helpers in real life hide and seek games. They help find people who are doing bad things and need to be caught.

Now, one way police officers can find people is by checking their social media accounts, like Facebook or Instagram. When we post things on social media, it's kind of like leaving little clues or hints about ourselves. People might post pictures of where they are or what they're doing, or they might write things or use hashtags that can give clues about their plans or feelings.

So, police officers can use these clues to help them figure out where someone is or what they might be doing. For example, if someone posts a picture of themselves at a certain location, the police can look at that picture and use other clues like street signs or buildings in the background to figure out where that person is.

It's important to remember that police officers can only do this if they have a good reason to believe someone is breaking the law. They can't just go snooping through people's social media pages for fun. But when they do have a good reason to look, social media can be a really helpful tool for them!
