ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Use of torture since 1948

Okay, kiddo, so torture is when someone hurts another person on purpose to get information or make them do something. In 1948, a bunch of countries made a promise not to torture anyone anymore. But some countries didn't keep their promise.

Sometimes, bosses or leaders think that torturing someone will help them get what they want. They might hurt someone a lot or make them feel really scared. This is something that's not okay, and it can traumatize people for a long time.

Torture is bad and hurts people, and we should never use it. And countries that do use it could get into trouble for breaking their promise.
