So, you know how when it rains really hard outside, you might see water flowing down the street in little streams or rivers?
Well, valleys on Mars are kinda like that, but instead of rainwater, they were formed by a long time ago when liquid water flowed on the surface of Mars.
Back then, Mars was warmer, and it had more water. And as that water flowed, it carved out these long, narrow valleys in the ground.
Nowadays, the water on Mars is frozen and the planet is much colder, so we don't see these flowing streams anymore. But we can still see the valleys they carved out, and scientists study them to learn more about what Mars was like a long, long time ago.
