A vehicle snorkel is like a giant straw that helps a car breathe air. When a car drives through water that is too deep, the engine can suck in water instead of air, which can cause the car to stop working. That's where the snorkel comes in! It's a special part that sticks up out of the car and is attached to the air intake (where the engine gets its air from). The snorkel lets the car take in clean air from the top of the vehicle instead of from the water below. Think of it like taking a deep breath with your nose plugged versus being able to breathe normally - the snorkel lets the car breathe normally even when it's underwater (but only a little bit, don't try to drive your car completely submerged!). This way, the car can keep on driving even through water that would normally make it stop.
