Venetian Ionian Islands

Okay kiddo, so you know about Italy, right? Well, there used to be a really powerful city in Italy a long time ago called Venice. The people of Venice were very skilled at sailing and they became very good at trading things with other countries.

Now, do you know where Greece is on the map? Great! There are some islands close to Greece that used to belong to Venice and these are called the Venetian Ionian Islands. Ionian means "related to the Ionian Sea", which is the body of water around these islands.

Venice owned these islands for a long time and they built really beautiful buildings and houses there! But eventually, some other countries wanted to take the islands away from Venice, and they succeeded.

Today, the Venetian Ionian Islands are part of Greece and they have their own culture and traditions. People still visit the islands to see the old Venetian architecture and enjoy the beautiful beaches and scenery.
