Okay, so have you ever gone swimming in a pool with goggles on and felt the bubbles coming out of the little holes on your mask? Well, submarines also have little holes that let air out, but they are not for fun bubbles.
These holes are called vents, and they help the submarine control its level underwater. See, a submarine has a lot of heavy equipment inside of it and it also has tanks that can fill up with water or air. If too much water gets in the tanks, the submarine can become too heavy and sink down to the bottom of the ocean.
The vents help the crew release just the right amount of air so the submarine can stay at a safe depth. They can also use the vents to let out any extra air that builds up in the submarine when they are running underwater.
So without vents, a submarine would not be able to stay underwater and would not be able to protect our country in the way that it does. Pretty cool, huh?
