ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Verb phrase ellipsis

Sometimes when we talk, we don't say all the words we want to. This is called "ellipsis." Now, when we have sentences with verbs in them, we can also leave out some words in a sentence, but still know what the person is talking about. For example, if someone asks you, "Did you drink water?" you can answer with "Yes, I did." It's not necessary to repeat the word "drink." This is where "verb phrase ellipsis" comes in. We leave out the verb in the sentence, because we are repeating information that was already said. It helps us speak more efficiently and quickly, without sacrificing the meaning of our words.
