Vertep

Vertep is a traditional Christmas play that is popular in Ukraine, Russia, and other Eastern European countries. It is usually performed by children and young people, who dress up in colorful costumes and act out different scenes from the Christmas story.

The play typically begins with a procession of characters, including angels, shepherds, and the wise men, who make their way to the stable where Jesus was born. They carry with them gifts and instruments like tambourines, trumpets, and drums.

Once they arrive, the different scenes of the Christmas story are acted out, such as the Annunciation to Mary, the journey to Bethlehem, and the birth of Jesus. The plays are usually accompanied by music and singing, and often have a comedic element, with characters such as the mischievous devil or the gossiping village women.

Vertep plays have been performed for centuries, and they continue to be an important part of Christmas celebrations in Eastern Europe. They are a way for communities to come together and celebrate the Christian story, while also passing down traditional customs and practices to younger generations.
