Vigesimal

Vigesimal is a fancy counting system that uses groups of 20 instead of groups of 10 like we normally do when we count. It's like if you had 20 fingers instead of just 10!

Instead of counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and starting over again at 1, in vigesimal you would start counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A (which we use to represent 10), B (which means 11), C (which means 12), and so on until you get to 19.

Then instead of starting all over again at 1 like we do in normal counting, you would start with 1 again, but this time you would add a 2 in front of it to show that you have counted 20. So 21 would be represented as "1,0" (because you've counted one group of 20 and 0 ones). And then you would keep counting up from there: 1,1; 1,2; 1,3; and so on until you get to 1,9.

Once you reach 1,9, you would start with 2 and count up again: 2,0; 2,1; 2,2; and so on until you reach 2,19. And then you would start with 3 and keep going until you're done counting.

It might seem a bit confusing at first, but vigesimal is actually still used today by some cultures in places like Mexico and Papua New Guinea.
