ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Vikram Samvat

Ok kiddo, let's talk about Vikram Samvat. It's a way people in India and Nepal count years.

You know how we count years from when Jesus was born? That's called the Gregorian calendar. Well, Vikram Samvat starts counting from a different event.

A long time ago, a king named Vikramaditya defeated some enemies and became emperor. This was a really big deal and people wanted to remember it. So they started counting years from the day he became emperor. That was in the year 58 BCE.

So every year after that became a higher number, like 1, 2, 3, and so on. But there's one thing you might find tricky: Vikram Samvat doesn't start on January 1st like the Gregorian calendar. Instead, it starts on the first day of a Hindu month called Kartika. That's usually in October or November on our calendar.

That's the basics of Vikram Samvat, buddy. It's just a different way of counting years that's important in some parts of South Asia.
