ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Virtual Extensible LAN

Okay, so imagine you have a bunch of toys in your room, but you want to play with some friends who live far away. Virtual extensible LAN (or VXLAN for short) is like having a magical toy box that can connect to other toy boxes far away!

Just like how you can put your toys in different containers or boxes, network information can also be put in different "containers" called VLANs. With VXLAN, we can connect different VLANs together to make one big toy box, even if they are in different parts of the house!

But how does VXLAN know which toy goes where? It works by giving each toy a special label, just like how you might label a box to say what toys are inside. This special label is called a VXLAN network identifier (VNI).

So, when you want to play with your friends who live far away, you can put some of your toys in the magical VXLAN toy box, and they can put some of their toys in there, too! You can all play together now, even though you are in different rooms or even different houses!

In short, VXLAN is like a magical toy box that connects different VLANs together using special labels called VNIs, so you can play with your friends who are far away!
