Von Neumann neighborhood

Von Neumann neighborhoods are the cells around an individual cell in a grid-like pattern. This can be compared to a neighborhood of houses in a city. Say that the individual cell is a house in a city. The von Neumann neighbors are the houses around it that are directly beside, above, below, and diagonal to it. It's named after the mathematician John von Neumann, who worked out this way of looking at things.
