ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wörgl

Wörgl was a town in Austria that did something very special a long time ago. The people who lived in Wörgl weren't very rich - they were just ordinary folks trying to make a living. But they were having a hard time because there wasn't enough money going around. You see, back then there was something called the Great Depression. It was a time when many people around the world didn't have jobs and didn't have enough money to buy the things they needed.

The people in Wörgl decided to try something new to help themselves. They invented a type of money that they called "stamp scrip". This money looked like regular money, but it worked a little differently.

When you got some stamp scrip, you had to put a special stamp on it every month. This stamp cost a little bit of money, but it meant that the stamp scrip didn't lose its value over time. So people could keep using it instead of regular money that might lose value.

But the really cool thing about stamp scrip was that it encouraged people to spend their money quickly! That's because if you didn't spend your stamp scrip within a month, you had to put even more stamps on it. That meant you would lose money if you didn't spend it.

So people in Wörgl started spending their stamp scrip really quickly. They bought things they needed and also things they wanted, like new clothes or toys. This made the local economy better because businesses were selling more things. People had more jobs and there was more money going around.

Other towns and cities heard about Wörgl's stamp scrip and some of them tried using it too. But the government didn't like it because they thought it was a threat to regular money. So they made it illegal and Wörgl had to stop using it after a while.

But the people in Wörgl will always be remembered for inventing stamp scrip and making their town a better place to live during a tough time.
