ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

W.V. Quine

Okay kiddo, let's talk about W.V. Quine!

W.V. Quine was a really smart professor who studied language and how we understand the world around us. He said that the way we understand things depends on the words we use to describe them. So if we use different words to describe the same thing, we might not understand each other very well.

Quine also talked about something called "ontological commitment". That's a big phrase, but what it means is that when we talk about something, we're saying that it really exists in the world. So if I say "unicorns have rainbow hair", I'm making an ontological commitment that unicorns really exist and have rainbow hair.

But Quine said that sometimes we use words that don't actually refer to anything in the world. Like if I say "the moon is made of green cheese", that's not true - the moon is actually made of rock! So Quine thought that some of the things we say might not be really meaningful if they don't match up with what's actually true in the world.

Overall, Quine was really interested in how we use words to understand the world, and he wanted to make sure that we're saying things that actually make sense and match up with reality. And that's a really cool idea!
