ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

WWE brand extension

Okay, so you know how in WWE, there are a bunch of wrestlers (like John Cena and The Undertaker) who fight each other in matches? Well, sometimes WWE decides to split those wrestlers up into two different groups, called "brands."

Think of it like having two different teams of wrestlers. One team might have John Cena, and the other might have The Undertaker. They might still fight each other sometimes, but they're on different teams. WWE does this because they want to make things more exciting for fans and create new rivalries between wrestlers.

So, the first time WWE did this was back in 2002, and they called it the "brand extension." They divided all the wrestlers into two brands, called "Raw" and "Smackdown." Each brand had its own show on TV where they would have matches and storylines. Fans could choose which brand they liked better and root for their favorite wrestlers on that brand.

The brand extension lasted several years, but then in 2011, WWE decided to end it and merge the brands back together again. However, in 2016 they brought back the brand extension and split the wrestlers into two groups again. Now there are three brands: Raw, Smackdown, and NXT.

Each brand has its own set of wrestlers, shows, and championships. Sometimes wrestlers from one brand might go to another brand for a special match, but most of the time they stay on their own brand. WWE hopes that the brand extension will keep things exciting for fans and create new opportunities for wrestlers to shine.
