ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Waste characterisation

Waste characterisation is like sorting your toys into different groups. Think of all your toys as waste and you need to put them in separate piles depending on what kind of toy they are. Some toys might be soft and cuddly, like teddy bears; some might be hard and need to be built, like Legos; some might be messy and need to be cleaned up, like paints.

Like sorting your toys into different groups, waste characterisation is sorting different types of waste into separate piles depending on what they are made of, how they can be recycled, and how they need to be disposed of.

For example, food waste needs to be separated from paper and plastic waste because it can be composted and turned into soil, while paper and plastic waste can be recycled. Hazardous waste, like batteries or chemicals, needs to be separated because it needs special treatment to make sure it doesn't harm the environment.

Waste characterisation helps us understand what kind of waste we have, how much of it we have, and what we can do with it so we can make sure we are reducing waste and protecting the environment.
