ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Watchnight service

Okay kiddo, so a watchnight service is when people get together at church on New Year's Eve to ring in the new year. It's sort of like a party, but at a church.

During the watchnight service, there might be singing and praying, and the pastor might give a special message about the upcoming year. Some churches also have a big meal or snacks to share together.

The name "watchnight" comes from the idea that people would stay up all night to make sure the new year starts off on the right foot. So it's sort of like staying up late on Christmas Eve to wait for Santa, but for New Year's Eve at church.

It's a way for people to reflect on the past year and think about what they want to do in the new year. Some people might make resolutions or goals for themselves, like being kinder to others or learning a new skill.

Overall, it's a fun and meaningful way to ring in the new year with the people you care about.
