An alluvial fan is a big shape on the ground made of lots of small rocks and dirt that was dropped there by a river over a very long period of time. Alluvial fans can be very useful for humans because they can collect water from rivers and help us get water to use. The water can be used to drink, to irrigate plants, and to fill up other reservoirs. When it rains, the water will fall onto an alluvial fan and then spread out across it, collecting in small pools and puddles that can be used. People can build dams and wells on an alluvial fan to get water.
