Wave function collapse

Wave function collapse is what happens when a particle - like an atom - changes its position or energy. Think of a wave in the ocean that starts out big and spread out - that is what a wave function looks like. When the wave function collapses, it means that the wave is no longer spread out, it is much smaller and focused. This is what happens when an atom changes its position or energy - the wave function collapses.
