ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Welsh Place-Name Society

The Welsh Place-Name Society is a group of people who really like words and names in Wales. They like to study and understand the words used to name places in Wales. These special names are called place-names!

When you go on a trip or go exploring, you might see names on signs like "Caerleon" or "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" - these are place-names! They are special names for towns, villages, mountains, and even rivers.

The Welsh Place-Name Society studies these place-names and tries to figure out where they come from. They use special tools to research the history and meaning behind the words. Sometimes they find out that a place-name comes from an old language that was spoken a long, long time ago.

For example, the name "Llandudno" actually comes from the Welsh language and means "Saint Tudno's church"! Cool, right?

Overall, the Welsh Place-Name Society helps people understand more about the language and history of Wales through studying special names for places.
