ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Western Balkans

The Western Balkans are an area in Europe that includes several countries which used to be part of Yugoslavia. This area consists of countries like Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia.

Let's pretend that you have a big box of different toys, all mixed up together. Yugoslavia was like a big box of toy countries that were all mixed together. But then the box was opened and the different toy countries got separated from each other.

Now each toy country is like its own separate toy – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia. They all have their own unique culture, language, and traditions.

But getting separated was not easy. Sometimes when toys are taken out of the box, they can get a little bit broken or damaged. So, some of the countries in the Western Balkans have had some tough times – like wars, political problems, and economic difficulties.

But with the help of other countries, like the European Union, they are working hard to fix these problems and make things better for everyone in the Western Balkans. They want all the toy countries to be peaceful and happy together, just like one big happy toy box!
