ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Western Cree syllabics

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen some letters that look like little pictures? They’re called syllabics. The Western Cree people use syllabics to write out their language.

But don’t worry, it’s not as hard as it sounds. Each syllabic stands for a sound in the Cree language, kind of like how each letter stands for a sound in English.

So instead of writing out words using the alphabet like we do in English, the Western Cree people use pictures to represent sounds. It’s like a secret code that only they understand!

And because Cree is a complex language with many different sounds, there are many different syllabics that you have to learn in order to read and write it. But with practice and patience, you can understand and use Cree syllabics just like the Western Cree people do.
