Okay kiddo, so there's this little bug called the western corn rootworm. It's small and brown and likes to eat the roots of corn plants. Now, when the rootworm eats the roots, it can hurt the corn plant and make it hard for the plant to grow big and strong.
Sometimes, farmers try to protect their corn plants by using a special kind of pesticide. This pesticide is supposed to kill the rootworm so it can't eat the corn plant's roots. But, the rootworm is pretty sneaky and it can start to become resistant to the pesticide. That means the pesticide won't work as well and it will become harder and harder for farmers to protect their corn plants.
Scientists are studying the rootworm and trying to figure out how to stop it from becoming resistant to the pesticide. They're also looking at other ways to protect the corn plants, like using natural predators of the rootworm or finding new pesticides that the rootworm hasn't become resistant to yet. It's a pretty tricky problem, but scientists are working hard to find a solution so farmers can keep growing their corn plants and we can still have yummy corn on the cob to eat!
