Whig Party (United States)

So, long time ago in the United States, there were two main political parties, the Democrats and the Whigs. The Whig Party was founded in 1834 and it was made up of people who didn't like how powerful the President was becoming. They wanted Congress (which is made up of a bunch of people) to have more power than the President.

The Whigs were also in favor of big businesses and wanted the government to help them grow. They also supported a national banking system and wanted to make sure the people who lived in the country had good transportation and communication systems.

They were against slavery and wanted to make sure that people were treated equally. However, some of the Whigs were also okay with letting states decide for themselves if they wanted slavery or not.

The Whigs had some really popular leaders like Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, but by the 1850s, the party started to fall apart. They had trouble agreeing on things like slavery and many of their members joined other parties.

So, basically, the Whig Party was a political party that didn't like how much power the President had and wanted Congress to have more say. They wanted to support big businesses and make sure the country had good transportation and communication systems. They were against slavery, but some of them were okay with letting states decide for themselves.
