ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Whispering gallery

Imagine you're in a big circle-shaped room with a super cool dome at the top. Now imagine whispering a secret to your friend who is on the opposite side of the room. But here's the thing: you don't want anyone else in the room to hear what you're saying.

Well, guess what? In a room like that, if you whisper towards the dome at just the right angle, your voice will bounce off the walls and all the way across the room to your friend. But since the sound waves move along the curve of the dome, they don't spread out as much as they would with a normal room.

That means that other people in the room won't hear what you're saying. It's like having your own private whispering conversation. This kind of special room is called a whispering gallery, and it's named after the way you can whisper and still be heard by someone far away in the gallery.

Some buildings, like churches, have whispering galleries, and they're really neat places to visit and whisper secrets to your friends. But be careful, because your secret might still get out if someone else is standing in just the right spot to hear it!
