ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

White mans burden

Okay, kiddo, so there was this idea a while ago that some white people had. They believed that it was their responsibility to help out other people who they thought weren't as good or smart as them, just because they were white. They called this the "white man's burden."

They thought that they were doing a good thing by bringing their culture and ways of doing things to other parts of the world. They believed that they were helping to civilize these other people and make them better. But actually, this idea was very wrong and hurtful.

They were basically saying that people who didn't look or act like them needed their help, even though these other people had their own unique cultures and ways of doing things that were just as good as theirs. It was a way of thinking that led to a lot of discrimination and unfair treatment of people who were different from them.

Nowadays, we know that the idea of the white man's burden was not only wrong, but also harmful. We should treat everyone with respect and value their different cultures and perspectives. We should learn from each other instead of trying to change people to be more like us.
