Whitewater canoeing is like going on a really bumpy, wet and wild roller coaster ride, but on a river in a canoe! Imagine you are sitting in a long and narrow boat with someone else, and you have a special paddle that you use to paddle through the water.
Now, some rivers have parts that are very calm and easy to paddle through, but other parts are really fast and bumpy with lots of big waves, rocks and obstacles in the way. These parts are called 'whitewater'.
When you come to these parts, you need to be very careful and use your body and paddle to help your boat go where you want it to go. The other person in the canoe with you helps too! You might have to paddle really fast to get through a fast section, or use quick turns to go around rocks.
Sometimes, when the river is really bumpy, you might even tip over and get wet! But that's part of the fun. You always have to wear a special helmet, life-jacket and other gear to stay safe.
Whitewater canoeing can be very exciting and adventurous, but it's also important to be prepared and know what you're doing with the help of an experienced guide or teacher.
