ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wine/water mixing problem

Ok, so imagine you have two cups, one is filled with water and the other with wine. You really like the taste of the wine but you want to make it a little bit less strong so it's not too strong for you to drink. You also don't want it to be too weak that it doesn't taste like wine anymore. So, what can you do?

Well, one thing you could do is pour some water into the wine cup to make it less strong. But how much water should you pour? If you pour too little, the wine will still be too strong. If you pour too much, it will be too weak.

The trick to figuring this out is to use something called the "ratio" between the wine and water. The ratio is just a fancy word for how much of each thing you have in comparison to the other.

For example, if you have 1 cup of wine and you want to mix in 1 cup of water, then the ratio of wine to water is 1:1 (pronounced "one to one").

But what if you want to make the wine even weaker? Let's say you want to mix in 2 cups of water. Now the ratio of wine to water is 1:2 (pronounced "one to two").

So, to make it simple: the more water you add, the weaker the wine will be. But you have to make sure you add enough water so that it's not too strong, but not too much so that it's not too weak!
