ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wire gauge

Wire gauge is like the size of a straw. Just like how big or small a straw is, wires can be big or small. The bigger the wire, the more electricity it can carry without getting too hot or breaking.

Wire gauge is measured in numbers, like 10, 12, or 14. The bigger the number, the smaller the wire. So a 14-gauge wire is smaller than a 12-gauge wire.

When we use wires, we want to make sure we use the right size for the job. If we use a wire that's too small, it might get too hot and start a fire. If we use a wire that's too big, it might be wasted since it won't actually carry any more electricity than we need.

So just like picking the right size straw for your drink, we need to pick the right size wire for our electrical needs.
