ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wokou

So kiddo, have you ever heard about pirates? Well, long long ago, there were some pirates who lived in China and Japan. They were called wokou.

Now wokou were not like other pirates who sailed on big ships and attacked other ships on the sea. Wokou were sneaky pirates who would sneak up on villagers who lived near the coast and steal their things. They were like thieves who lived on boats and sneaked into villages to take things that didn't belong to them.

People were scared of wokou because they would come in the middle of the night and take things. So, the villagers had to be very careful and built walls around their houses to keep them out.

Sometimes, the Chinese and Japanese armies would try to stop wokou by fighting them in battles. However, the battles were not easy because wokou knew how to use the sea to their advantage. They could move their boats quickly to escape, so it was hard to catch them.

Eventually, wokou stopped being a big problem when the Chinese and Japanese governments worked together to stop them. They made stronger walls around the villages and improved their armies' skills to defeat wokou.

So, that's what wokou were, kiddo. They were sneaky pirates who were not very nice to villagers, but they were eventually stopped by the Chinese and Japanese governments.
