Wong Sun v. United States

Once upon a time, there was a man named Wong Sun who lived in the United States. The police suspected that he was involved in criminal activities, so they went to his home to investigate. When they arrived, Wong Sun was not there, but they found his friend, a man named Toy, and arrested him.

The police asked Toy if he knew where Wong Sun was, and Toy said that he did not. However, the police knew that Toy had been with Wong Sun recently, so they kept asking him questions. Finally, Toy told the police that he had gone to Wong Sun's home to buy drugs.

The police then went to the address Toy had given them and found Wong Sun there. They arrested him and found some drugs in his home. Wong Sun was charged with a crime, and he went to court to argue that the police had violated his Fourth Amendment rights by conducting an illegal search.

The Fourth Amendment is a law that says the police cannot search someone's home without a warrant or a good reason. In this case, Wong Sun argued that the police did not have a warrant and did not have a good reason to search his home.

The court had to decide if the police violated Wong Sun's rights. The court said that the police did violate his rights when they arrested Toy without a warrant and without a good reason. However, the court also said that Wong Sun's arrest and the search of his home were okay because they were based on Toy's confession.

The court said that Wong Sun's arrest and the search of his home were legal because Toy's confession directly led the police to Wong Sun. This is called the "fruit of the poisonous tree" doctrine, which means that evidence obtained illegally cannot be used in court, but evidence obtained legally as a result of an illegal search can be used in court.

So, even though the police violated Toy's Fourth Amendment rights by arresting him without a warrant, they were able to use his confession to find Wong Sun and search his home. The court ultimately upheld Wong Sun's conviction for a crime, and he was sent to jail.
