When you cut down a tree, the wood inside is very wet and dense, just like a sponge being soaked in water. This is because the tree sucked up water from the ground and stored it inside its trunk and branches.
To turn this wet wood into something we can use for building and making furniture, we need to get rid of the water inside. We do this through a process called wood drying.
First, we need to cut the wood into the size and shape we want. Then we stack it up in a special room with lots of air circulating around it. This allows the water inside the wood to gradually evaporate and escape into the air.
But we can't just leave the wood in this room forever - too much drying can make the wood crack and change shape. So we need to control the temperature and humidity inside the room very carefully, so the wood dries slowly and evenly without getting damaged.
This process can take weeks or even months, depending on the size and type of wood we're drying. But when it's done, we have strong, sturdy wood that's just right for building and making things!
