Word problem for groups

Imagine you have 3 apples and you want to share them among 2 friends. How many apples will each friend get?

Well, first we need to divide the 3 apples between the 2 friends. We can start by giving 1 apple to each friend, but we still have 1 apple left over.

To make it fair, we can give the extra apple to one of the friends, but then the other friend will feel left out.

So, a better solution would be to cut the extra apple in half, and give half to each friend. This means that each friend will have 1 and a half apples, which is more fair than just giving the extra apple to one friend.

So, each friend will get 1 and a half apples, and there will be no extra apples left over. This is called dividing into groups, where we share something between a number of people or groups by dividing it equally.
