ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

World history (field)

World history is the story of how people and societies have changed and developed over time, all around the world. Just like how your own life has a history of events that have happened to you, the entire world has a history of events that have happened to the people who lived before us.

World history covers everything from ancient times to today, and it looks at how people and civilizations have interacted with one another over time. By studying world history, we can learn about important events like wars, revolutions, and inventions, as well as how different cultures and traditions have developed and changed over time.

To understand world history, we need to break it down into different time periods, like when the dinosaurs roamed the earth, when the first humans left Africa, when civilizations began to form, and when different cultures developed religions and beliefs. We also study geography, because where people lived and how they interacted with their environments played a big role in shaping their societies.

So, world history is like a giant puzzle that we piece together using evidence from artifacts, writings, and stories from people who have lived throughout history. It helps us understand how people all over the world have lived, worked, and created amazing things, and how we can learn from their successes and mistakes to make our own world a better place.
