Hey kiddo, do you know who Zebulon Brockway is? He was a man who lived a really long time ago, in the 1800s. He was important because he helped change the way we treat prisoners.
Before Zebulon Brockway, prisoners were often locked up in small, dark cells with no windows, and they didn't get much food or exercise. They were treated very harshly and sometimes even beaten.
But Mr. Brockway thought this was wrong. He believed that prisoners should be treated with kindness and respect, and that they should have a chance to learn new skills so they could become better people.
He came up with an idea called "rehabilitation." This means helping prisoners learn new things and become better people so they don't commit crimes again when they get out of jail.
Mr. Brockway opened a prison in New York where he put his ideas into practice. He made sure the prisoners had enough food and exercise, and he gave them job training so they could learn new skills. He even had a library where they could read books!
Other people saw how well Mr. Brockway's prison was working, and soon other prisons around the country started to change the way they treated prisoners too.
So, thanks to Zebulon Brockway, prisoners are now treated with more kindness and respect than they used to be. Isn't that cool?
