civil forfeiture

Civil forfeiture is when the government takes away stuff that it thinks was involved in a crime. It could be things like money, cars, or even houses. The government thinks that the stuff was used to commit a crime or was bought with money that was made from a crime, so it takes it away. Sometimes the people who owned the stuff didn't do anything wrong, but they still lose their stuff.
