ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

dark tourism

Dark tourism is when grown-ups go visit places that are scary, creepy or connected to tragic events like wars or disasters. It's like going on a field trip to see something very interesting, but also a bit scary. It's like visiting places where some really bad things have happened, like museums or memorials for wars, genocide or natural disasters.

For example, people may visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City to learn about the terrible things that happened during the September 11 terrorist attacks. They may visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland to learn about the horrible things that happened during the Holocaust.

Although it may seem strange to visit such places, it can actually help people understand the world better and learn from those past events. Visiting these places and learning about them can help us appreciate the past, be more mindful of the present, and prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.
