ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

derivation

Derivation is when you take something that exists already and make changes to it, usually to make it better or more useful. To give an example, let's say we wanted to make a better type of car. We could look at the design of other cars and then use the same basic components to make our own version that is a bit faster, uses less fuel, or runs quieter. That new version of the car would be the derived version, because it was created from the original car design. Derivation is used in different areas such as mathematics, science, and engineering.
