food and cooking hygiene

Hey there little buddy! Let's talk about food and cooking hygiene!

When people talk about hygiene, they mean keeping things clean and germ-free. And when talking specifically about food and cooking hygiene, we mean keeping the things we eat and the things we use to cook them very, very clean to avoid getting sick from germs.

First things first, we have to make sure we ourselves are clean before we start handling food. That means washing our hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. That's the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice!

We also need to make sure that the tools and utensils we use to cook and eat our food are clean too. That means washing dishes and utensils with soap and hot water before using them. We don't want any leftover food or germs from the last time we used them to mix in with our new meal.

When preparing food, we have to make sure to separate things that could be cross-contaminated. Cross-contamination is when germs from one food spread to another food. For example, if we cut raw chicken on a cutting board and then use that same board to cut vegetables, the germs from the raw chicken will now be on our vegetables. To avoid that, we must use separate utensils and cutting boards for each type of food.

Cooking our food also helps eliminate some germs. When we cook food, we use heat to kill any harmful bacteria that could get us sick. It's important to make sure our food is cooked to the correct temperature, and that we use a food thermometer to check that it's done right.

Lastly, we need to store our food properly. This means keeping our raw foods separate from our cooked foods, and making sure they're stored at the right temperature. We can also keep our food fresh longer by storing it in the fridge or freezer.

So there you have it, little buddy! Food and cooking hygiene are all about being clean and germ-free. By washing our hands, keeping our cooking area clean, separating our foods, cooking at the right temperature, and storing our food properly, we can help prevent getting sick from germs in our food.
