The Holy Roman Empire was an empire in Europe that lasted from about 800 AD to 1806 AD. It was started by the Romans, who were one of the first civilizations in Europe. The Holy Roman Empire was a very powerful empire, and it covered almost all of Europe except for England and some parts of Scandinavia. The emperor was the leader of the empire and they made laws and kept order. The emperors were usually chosen by the people, and they had to be approved by the pope, who was the head of the Catholic Church. The people living in the Holy Roman Empire were allowed to practice the religion of their choice, so long as it was Christian. Over time, some of the countries in Europe became very powerful and started to fight each other. Eventually, these countries stopped recognizing the authority of the Holy Roman Empire and it ended in 1806.
