Silk is made from the cocoons of silkworms. Silkworms spin cocoons made mostly of one type of thread, which are grown from a protein made in the silkworm's body. Inside each cocoon is a single, long thread. People collect the cocoons and put them in hot water so that the cocoons can be unraveled. After the cocoons are unraveled, people stretch the long thread and wind it onto a spool, making a long continuous strand of silk thread. This silk thread is then spun into silk fabric or used to make other products.
